Challenges for the Food and Beverage Industry

The food and beverage industry is facing a multitude of challenges, whether in production, supply chain, sale, or service.  Greater flexibility can help companies to overcome challenges and to prosper despite these challenges.

There are three main challenges facing the industry. Severe supply chain interruptions, high input price inflation, and staff shortages.

Recent industry surveys highlighted that a third of food manufacturers in the UK are struggling with the availability of materials, with the war in Ukraine continuing to impact critical ingredients at a global level, as well as other supply chain shocks across the board. With the lack of availability of such key items, production must either be reduced or adapted to use other, more readily available, ingredients. This can have a huge impact on industry revenues and affects not only production scheduling and stock holding costs, but also further down the chain, where grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, etc. are seeing shortages of items and have to adapt their offering to their customers. How can food and beverage companies adapt to this?

Inflation across EMEA is in double digits. Input prices and energy prices are increasing rapidly for the food and beverage industry putting pressure on the bottom line, but the sheer scale and speed of the price rises also means many must pass on the increases to customers in higher prices, causing further disruption and volatility to the demand side.

Over 75% of businesses in the food and beverage industry are suffering from staff shortages, leading to service and productivity issues. Retaining staff and ensuring they are able to be productive are key to maintaining service levels and keeping customers satisfied.

Flexibility is Key

In essence, more flexibility is required to ensure greater ability to fit with the prevailing conditions as operating conditions are now more volatile. One area ready for improved flexibility is in print. Be it the ability to switch ingredients printed on product packaging, smarter color-coded labelling for goods in warehouses, or restaurant menus based on current product availability and costs that day, the ability to print in house would provide greater flexibility elsewhere to maximise revenues and maintain the business. Historically, printing many of these items has been outsourced due to cost and quality as printing in house was considered expensive and cumbersome, especially when printing in color.

Imagine the power to create a new menu every day based on today’s specials and availability. This will not only help promote your business in the best way through superb color output, and boost your revenues by offering only what is available and not showing what is not, it will ensure happier, more effective wait staff who are able to guide customers more effectively and avoid having to remember what is not available on the pre-printed menu.

Printing in house not only brings flexibility but also saves you money by ensuring you print only what is needed. Of course, you need the right print device to ensure that can happen.

With the launch of new industrial color LED printers from Printronix, greater flexibility is possible, enabling in house printing without the need to compromise on quality or cost. Designed to print effectively in industrial environments these devices can quickly and easily flex to the latest business requirements. Not only that, they can provide stunning results, not possible on comparable office laser devices, by printing on speciality media to really help promote your business in the best possible way in print. You may not have heard of Printronix, but the company is a global leader in line matrix printing and is on a mission to bring new, exciting opportunities to industrial printing.

Printronix manufactures a line of heavy-duty impact printers, used across the globe in automotive, retail, food & beverage, pharma distribution, transportation & logistics enterprises, government services and utilities. “For nearly 50 years Printronix has been a global provider of industrial print solutions, with a direct market presence in North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle-East, Africa, China, South-East Asia, Korea, Taiwan and India,” says CEO Werner Heid, explaining that the company’s solutions are designed for mission-critical applications, especially in harsh environments.

Key applications include just-in-time build sheets for production (automotive) and documentation for the last mile (from palette configuration to the truck) in the warehouse environment. Printronix operates in an environment where its customers strive for continuous productivity improvements, in order to support continuous supply chain growth without increasing warehouse production space and costs.

“Some of our customers are telling us that post-pandemic, volumes are up as much as 30%,” continues Heid. “However, in these highly uncertain times, they shy away from major investments in increased physical capacity. Instead, they are looking for ways to accommodate increased demand with improved efficiency from existing assets. These requirements are the primary driver of Printronix’s future growth and development plans.”

Heid explains that one solution is the use of colour, instead of black and white printing, allowing customers to increase warehouse material labelling efficiency. Many warehouses have started to adopt colour, as well as use cloud-based print usage data analytics in warehouses and production to increase productivity and/or reduce human error.

New launches

As part of a 3-year growth strategy Printronix is bringing to market new laser and LED models that are designed to work with the same Printronix values as their line matrix printers. Just launched in EMEA are the first two of these industrial laser products, the LP654C and LP844C. According to Heid, line matrix printers provide the ultimate reliability and lowest cost printing in mission critical, industrial environments. Printronix has taken its extensive experience and knowledge in this area and applied it to industrial colour laser printers.

The company’s mission is to bring colour into the industrial space where it can add huge value, while not compromising on the need for low running costs, mission critical reliability and high performance. Furthermore, Heid comments that both the newly launched devices are smaller than “comparable office laser printers” and are designed to work in constrained spaces be it in a production environment, a warehouse or even inside a kiosk or on a rack in the tightest of spaces.

The LP654C is as small as a personal desk top color printer. “Lift it up and its 29.5kg demonstrates why it’s different,” says Heid. “Made with up to 70% more metal than an office printer and correspondingly less plastic the LP654C is twice as durable as typical colour laser printers in the market, with a useful life of 600,000 pages and a maximum duty cycle of 100,000 pages per month when required.”

It’s not just the small size that ensures it can print in constrained spaces. Designed with full front access and highly efficient cooling technology the LP654C only ever needs to be opened from the front for its entire life with only 20mm of space required at the sides of the device. Heid comments that no other laser printer has been designed in this way with at least one other side of the device needed to clear jams, or change different consumables, meaning the LP654C has the smallest operating space requirement of any colour laser, making it ideal for production lines, placing in racks, or inside kiosks where space and access is constrained.

Requiring less space

Heid continues: “The LP654C is the big brother to the LP654C. While it offers A3 capability, it is the smallest A3 colour laser printer in the world. So, these new printers from Printronix require the least space of all comparable colour lasers in the market, yet are twice as durable as typical colour laser printers, there must be some compromises made in other areas, right? Well no. Let’s start with performance. The LP654C prints at 35 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and full colour, while the LP844C takes this up to 36ppm, so offer workgroup level performance from their desktop size. Far more than comparable printers, even those twice the size.”

There’s certainly no compromise made when it comes to print quality. Thanks to the 1200 x 1200 dpi LED print heads and ProQ multilevel technology, the LP654C and LP844C can be used to create stunning output, which can be used for customer facing marketing purposes or to provide the greatest clarity for signage in the warehouse. Industrial robustness does not mean poor output quality.

“It is now time to say colour can improve our business efficiency and can be used cost effectively in the manufacturing and logistics environments.”

However, it is in the flexibility of the media handling where the LP654C and LP844C stand out. With a straight paper path, both printers can easily handle a broad range of media.  From shelf edge labels to A3 GHS labels, from A6 to 1.2meter long banners, from envelopes to insert slips, waterproof synthetic media to the thickest cardstock these devices can print on a much wider range of media than you have come to expect from laser-based devices.

“And, coming from Printronix, not only are these printers compact, flexible and high-performance with great print quality, they are also ultra-durable, and offer unrivalled cost of ownership,” says Heid. “Separate drums and toners, as well as fully end-user replaceable fusers and belts, mean optimum consumables usage and no unpleasant surprises.”

The game has changed

Heid concludes: “Many in the manufacturing and logistics space’s first reaction is ‘We don’t need colour, it’s too expensive’. This is based on what has been available before. Colour printers were always compromised. Small printers lacked performance and were expensive to run. Large printers would not fit in constrained spaces and were expensive to buy. None could print effectively on the range of media the LP654C and LP844C can, and none were targeted at harsh environments where Printronix has always operated with its line matrix devices. The game has changed. It is now time to say colour can improve our business efficiency and can be used cost effectively in the manufacturing and logistics environments. Color is here. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you see.”

FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS, PRINTRONIX HAS BEEN ADDRESSING GLOBAL CUSTOMER NEEDS FOR MISSION-CRITICAL INDUSTRIAL PRINTING.

US-based Printronix’s purpose is to be a trusted global leader for highly reliable, innovative printing products, solutions, and services to support and improve business-critical applications in industrial environments.

Printronix manufactures a line of heavy-duty impact printers, used across the globe in automotive, retail, food & beverage, pharma distribution, transportation & logistics enterprises, government services and utilities.

“Printronix is a global provider of industrial print solutions, with a direct market presence in North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle-East, Africa, China, South-East Asia, Korea, Taiwan and India,” says CEO Werner Heid, explaining that the company’s solutions are designed for mission-critical applications, especially in harsh environments.

Key applications include just-in-time build sheets for production (automotive) and documentation for the last mile (from palette configuration to the truck) in the warehouse environment.

“For example, we have customers all over the world in the pharmaceutical distribution, supplying pharmacies, hospitals and retirement homes. They have short delivery windows and if the paperwork is not ready, the truck cannot leave the warehouse. The whole process is supported by our equipment and if stopped, the entire operation stops. That’s what mission-critical means in our context.”

TAILORED TO CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS

The quality, reliability and robustness of the equipment provided make Printronix stand out in the marketplace, says Mr Heid. “We have a long-standing tenure with leading F500 global customers, with an average customer tenure of 24 years.”

“How have we achieved this? We offer the most reliable printer solutions & service to guarantee maximum product uptime, in line with our brand slogan ‘When Reliability Counts’. We also provide best-in-class lifetime total cost of ownership – our impact printing technology has the lowest total cost of ownership in the entire printing industries.”

“And, last but not least, we have the ability to adapt to customer-specific needs and can provide highly customised solutions. We are very close to our top-end users; we have a very good understanding of their document management needs within their factories or within their warehouses, and we are willing to adapt the equipment to fit better into their production or warehouse application processes.”

Mr Heid admits that continuing to provide reliability and consistency at every touch point of the company in uncertain times when inflation threatens demand, Covid-19 remains an issue, global conflicts hinder supplies and material price pressure increases present a significant challenge, but ones that Printronix has been managing well.

“We have sound relation-ships not only with our customers but also with our suppliers. We are flexible, trying to accommodate their needs and willing to optimise our purchasing practices towards our suppliers’ manufacturing processes although this means carrying higher levels of materials. Any crisis highlights the true value of partnerships.”

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS

As in any industry, environ-mental protection is a key topic in the printing business. Mr Heid affirms that Printronix’s high-performance impact printing solutions are based on a technology which is very sustainable and environmentally friendly in terms of product life and low power consumption.

“Although it is impossible to beat certain limiting factors of the technology, you can always improve certain aspects. Our products last a long time. It is a very different story to replace a machine only every 10 years as opposed to every three years. As for new products, we are focusing on equipment with high life cycles of 300,000 to 1,000,000 pages.”

He explains that the company is also launching a new, cloud-based Fleet Care Industrial Print Management System, a cloud IoT tool enabling customers to do analysis and manage their entire print fleet across the globe to achieve maximum uptime for their equipment and uninterrupted performance.

The tool enables usage balancing, an important factor for efficiency optimisation, as well as proactive maintenance and printer health analytics to reduce consumables waste and unneeded service visits. “The system actually enables customers to stretch the equipment life with better service and maintenance. All this has a direct, positive impact on the environment,” he points out.

IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY

Printronix operates in an environment where its customers strive for continuous productivity improvements, in order to support continuous supply chain growth without increasing warehouse production space and costs.

“Some of our customers are telling us that post-pandemic, volumes are up as much as 30%. However, in these highly uncertain times, they shy away from major investments in increased physical capacity. Instead, they are looking for ways to accommodate increased demand with improved efficiency from existing assets. These requirements are the primary driver of Printronix’s future growth and development plans.”

He explains that one solution is the use of colour, instead of black and white printing, allowing the customers to increase warehouse material labelling efficiency. Many warehouses have started to adopt colour, as well as use cloud-based print usage data analytics in warehouses and production to increase productivity and/or reduce human error.

“End-users deploy different industrial print technologies and brands, which have different duty and maintenance cycles, different usage patterns and inconsistent service levels, which makes managing industrial print fleets time-consuming and costly.”

“Our customers desire to simplify their operations by engaging vendors and solutions which provide a broad, brand- & technology-agnostic solutions covering. Our FleetCare solution will be able to satisfy this demand and help them increase productivity with the equipment they already have from different manufacturers.”

MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE FUTURE

Mr Heid affirms that the company is in growth mode. In October 2021, Printronix was acquired by Acacia Research Corporation, a publicly traded corporation that acquires undervalued businesses with a primary focus on mature technology, life sciences, industrial and certain financial services segments, and pursues opportunities for value creation.

The new owner is excited to support Printronix’s growth initiatives, including enabling M&A as an additional tool for growth. “In 2022 we started Year One of a three-year growth strategy, evolving Printronix from the leading impact printing solution provider to the leading all-industrial print solution provider. As such, we are investing in an expansion of our industrial printer solution portfolio.”

In July Printronix announced the launch of the first two models of an industrial-grade laser printer, and over the next nine months is planning to launch an additional six models to complete the portfolio. “We understand what it takes to make our industrial customers successful, and that knowledge is reflected in the new portfolio of products.”

The FleetCare Fleet Management system is also going to be launched shortly, and the company is ready to expand its existing multi-vendor service offering to enable consistent service management regardless of brand and technology.

“Our objective is to become the leading industrial print solution provider for all our customers’ industrial printing needs. Initially, the focus will be on the Americas and EMEA, which will be followed by expansion into key Asian markets,” concludes Mr Heid.

Irvine, CA, June 29, 2021 – Today Printronix is announcing our new P8000 Plus series of printers offering improved print quality, optional OpenPrint PDF & PostScript support, optional 802.1X & IPv6 support, and compliance with the latest IEC safety standard. This important announcement enhances the ability for Printronix Line Matrix technology to interface with changing system and network environments, while remaining rooted to the ultra-low operating cost, industrial reliability, and sustainability that only Line Matrix technology can deliver.

Leading supply-chain enterprises around the world have for decades relied on Printronix Line Matrix Printers for printing business critical documents used in the production and movement of goods.  With this latest announcement, Printronix is once again demonstrating its longstanding commitment to Line Matrix technology by ensuring it remains compatible with changing system and network environments, and fully capable of producing high quality text & barcodes … including QR Codes.

The P8000 Plus announcement encompasses ASCII Models P8C15 and P8C20, and Hanzi Models P8PH6, P8CH6, P8ZH6, and P8CH8.  Improved print quality on these models is obtained through the use of hammertips that are approximately 19% smaller.  As a result, text and barcode definition is improved for both single and multi-part printing.

Businesses intending to migrate to a new ERP or WMS platform in the future can safely invest in the new P8000 Plus, knowing that their new printer(s) can be easily upgraded with Printronix OpenPrint software to enable PDF & PostScript printing.  The OpenPrint upgrade includes 35 PostScript fonts, in addition to support for embedded PDF fonts, and Printronix SureScan for optimal linear barcode readability.

For businesses who are, or will be, adopting 802.1X and/or IPv6 to take advantage of increased network security, performance, and visibility, P8000 Plus models can be upgraded to allow for connectivity to 802.1X and IPv6 networks.

Consistent with all previous generations of Printronix Line Matrix Printers, the new P8000 Plus models carry forth the legacy of:

Although there is considerable focus today around cost per page due to the increasing adoption of managed print services, there is little focus on understanding the total cost of printer ownership. When purchasing a new vehicle, it is in our best interest to not only focus on MPG, but also on anticipated maintenance costs, life expectancy, function & capability, comfort, safety, emissions, and much more. When selecting printers that are to produce the business-critical documents needed for the manufacture or movement of goods, likewise, it is in the best interests of businesses to consider far more than the only cost per page.

Decision managers of companies required to print moderate to high volume or in harsh environments cannot rely only on cost per page to decide the best technology. It is necessary to consider the following aspects:

  • Life Expectancy: Printer lifespan based on the company’s usage and print requirements.
  • Function & Capability: How the technology will withstand the environmental conditions to which it will be submitted.
  • Day to Day Operating Cost: Aspects of the daily use to be considered, such as consumables costs, paper, required user intervention, e electricity.
  • Sustainability: The benefits of choosing a more sustainable technology.

Check out more details on how to calculate the cost of ownership and which aspects to consider when deciding the best print technology for your company.

Does your company use impact printers?

YES NO

Life Expectancy

Most IT personnel would unanimously agree that the longer an asset can last, the better, as much time and expense is involved in refreshing installed equipment. The average life span for a business Laser printer is 3-5 years, assuming 1.) Print volumes are on the low end of the recommended monthly duty cycle, 2.) The environment is climate controlled with virtually no fluctuation in temperature or humidity, and 3.) The air is free from any airborne contaminants such as dust.

In contrast, the average life span of a line matrix printer is around 7-10+ years, regardless of environment or monthly print volume.

Function & Capability

For the same reason it is unwise to consistently haul more payload than a particular truck is rated for, inappropriate printer technology placement will lead to an increasing frequency of downtime, and ultimately premature failure. Laser printers by design require clean air and precisely controlled temperature and humidity for optimal functionality and longevity. Extreme temperatures, or even variations in temperature, can cause condensation to occur within the device which can lead to electrical component failures. Airborne contaminants will build up over time on the rollers and drum which ultimately cause more frequent paper jams and print quality degradation. Humidity can cause cut-sheet media to curl, which will also lead to more paper jams, and static electricity can cause multiple sheets to stick together … again, leading to more paper jams.

Line Matrix Technology is designed to tolerate a much broader range of environmental conditions as the stored energy shuttle matrix print engine is virtually impervious to temperature swings, humidity, and airborne contaminants.   For this reason, Line Matrix remains the technology of choice for businesses who need to print documents or labels within industrial environments, and are unwilling to compromise on output reliability.

Day to Day Operating Cost

From a day to day standpoint, the hard operating costs include paper, toner/ribbon, maintenance kits (Laser only), and electricity. The soft operating costs include user efficiency related to required user intervention. Laser typically gets the win on the cost of paper, as cutsheet paper is more widely used and therefore, is more competitively priced. Line Matrix is the winner on energy consumption, and non-paper related consumables as the consumables cost per page of a typical business Laser printer is 5-6X that of a Line Matrix printer… the reason for which is the complexity and cost of Laser toner cartridges which contain chemical toner and many other components including rollers, blades, and a toner waste bin. As for soft costs, either Laser or Line Matrix could get the win as both have unique advantages. In some cases Laser may be favored if the business prefers to deal with separate cut sheets of paper, however, in other cases continuous form media holds an intrinsic value in terms of maintaining the order of printed sheets and the integrity of a multi-page document.

Sustainability

10-15yrs ago sustainability didn’t have near the focus it does today, however, now most large enterprises have dedicated Sustainability Officers whose sole objective is to ensure the company is engaging in proactive initiatives to minimize the total environmental impact. Even though Line Matrix may be perceived by many to be an old technology, it remains to be the most sustainable method of printing from the standpoint of 1.) Energy consumption – ~30% less than a typical business Laser printer, 2.) Longevity – 2-3X the lifespan of Laser, 3.) Far less chemicals & materials used in the manufacture of the consumables – Printronix Line Matrix Cartridge Ribbons consist only of a plastic housing (made from 100% recycled plastic resin), ribbon fabric, ink & gears, and 4.) Considerably less consumables waste.

Conclusion

In summary, Laser and Line Matrix printers each have their strengths and weaknesses, however, for moderate to high volume print requirements Line Matrix is the clear winner, regardless of office or industrial environment, from the standpoint of lifetime operating cost and environmental impact cost. When printing within industrial Environments, the lead of Line Matrix will be much greater considering the environmental forces that will likely cause premature failure of Laser technology devices.

The following offers an explanation of the critical printing elements required in laboratory testing facilities and demonstrates solutions for employing Printronix and TallyGenicom line matrix printers.

Challenges

Maintaining records from testing done in a laboratory facilities commonly involves the use of multi-part forms. Dispersing these forms to the appropriate location, client, physician, insurance provider, or hospital is a critical process.

For labs that collect human blood and urine specimens, the use of the multipart form is to track “Chain of Custody”, or CCF, for the specimen taken. This generally references a document or paper trail showing the seizure, custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposal of physical and electronic evidence of a human specimen test. Information is added on the CCF as the test specimen travels throughout the testing process, and this provides for specimen integrity and accountability of a test sample. The paperwork and testing supplies needed to support the CCF’s trail are crucial for verification before turnover to the respective laboratory testing facility.

Laboratory testing companies print millions of forms for CCF, invoicing, samples and collections bill of lading in their offices across the globe each year. With so many forms being printed every day, laboratory testing facilities are challenged to find a way to maintain records in an orderly and accurate fashion while keeping costs low.

Many laboratory test companies also employ multiple offices, and remote offices may only have lab technicians and accountants, but no IT personnel to assist in printer support or issues. Offices with lack of support run the risk of having low consumable reserves or lack of back-up printers which cause downtime when problems arise. These issues can lead to the inability to take collections and cause patient issues or non-compliance. When a location needs to print upwards of 4,000 forms a day, downtime can prove to be a costly issue.

Today there are many printing options on the market for these companies to choose from, their challenge is how to choose the best option to support their workload and environment.

Implementing a Solution

Printronix and TallyGenicom line matrix printers are the most effective and cost efficient solution on the market to fulfill the needs of the fast paced laboratory testing industry. The ability of laboratories to print clearly and legibly on up to 6 page multi-part forms provides cost savings and cuts downtime by eliminating the excessive use and replacement of laser and serial consumables, like ink and toner, and enables companies to avoid the time consuming task of printing multiple copies of the same form. The chore of keeping track of duplicate single sheet paperwork and making sure all forms are signed and distributed to the necessary parties is minimized.

Line Matrix printers make form tracking simple. The multi-part document allows the lab, insurance, CCF and patient information to be placed on one multiple part page and then dispersed to the necessary parties with ease. Errors are decreased, paperwork moves faster, and integrity and accountability of samples remains intact. Line matrix printers are not only reliable, having no printer paper jams and significantly less downtime, but they are also fast. With the ability to print up to 2,000 lines per minute, offices can quickly print all necessary forms and keep their flow of patients moving.

A crucial benefit of Printronix and TallyGenicom line matrix printers for laboratory testing companies with multiple locations is the inclusion of PrintNet Enterprise. PrintNet Enterprise is a remote management utility that provides superior control over networked printers, allowing for full remote printer fleet control via the use of a virtual operations panel and real-time dashboard. An IT operator can easily access configuration settings, updates and printer resources and download them to multiple printers simultaneously or receive email and SMS alerts if a printer goes down, or is disconnected, and address the problem from anywhere in the world.

Conclusion

Using Printronix and TallyGenicom line matrix printers in the laboratory testing industry is the smart choice. The durability, reliability, speed and mutli-part form capabilities provided with a line matrix printer enable users to deliver the best service possible to their customers to enable regulatory compliance, and to meet the daily demands of their mission critical printing.

Paris, 27 July 2018: In this prolonged hot dry spell, Printronix LLC is reminding businesses that its line matrix industrial printers can withstand temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F), whereas devices like laser printers are highly sensitive to humidity and extremes in temperatures, often causing them to jam or stop working.

Xavier Nicolaï, marketing manager of Printronix EMEA said: “All of Europe is experiencing an unprecedented period of hot, dry weather that would test even the most robust of machinery.”

“Printronix line matrix printers are designed to operate in harsh manufacturing and warehouse environments, withstanding humidity, extreme temperatures, dust, and dirt. Our printers provide mission critical solutions for the automotive, manufacturing, food and drink, retail distribution, and transport and logistics industries. When the heat is on, our devices help ensure production lines stay up and running thus avoiding costly downtime and production disruptions,” suggests Xavier.

Other print technologies like laser can be prone to premature failure, paper jams, and print quality issues when exposed to high extremes of temperature, humidity and dusty conditions. What makes line matrix printers better able to perform in demanding environments are their intrinsic technology of stored energy using powerful magnets, their sealed electronics and their metal construction.

Line matrix is a very energy efficient technology: it consumes as little as one third of the energy a laser printer would use during printing. And line matrix printers don’t emit any heat or ozone while printing so they won’t further raise the ambient temperature in the environment.

“In this sort of heat at work, the last thing you want to be sweating about is whether your printer will cope,” says Xavier. “Our line matrix devices deliver unparalleled uptime reliability and were designed for heavy usage and high print volumes.”
