On Sunday night, January 12th, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The greatest stars, directors, writers, and producers were there to receive the 25 awards given out that night. From Best Motion Picture-Drama, given to 12 Years a Slave, to Best Director, Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, awards were given for every ar

One movie that won a majority of the awards was American Hustle, which is about a con man, Irving Rosenfeld, who, along with his British partner, Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild FBI agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia. This movie won three of the film awards with Dallas Buyers Club trailing right behind winning two. Dallas Buyers Club is set in 1985 Dallas where electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is himself diagnosed with the disease.

For the television awards, both Breaking Bad and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were the most successful in wins. Both shows were awarded as the best in their respective genres, along with one other award. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has had mixed reviews by its viewers and other critics, but the show is looking up with the award for best TV comedy. It beat out some other enormous contenders for the award, like Parks and Recreation and The Big Bang Theory. Junior James Relick says, “Big Bang Theory is my favorite show, so I was mad that they didn’t get this award.”

Not only are the wins a big deal, but many viewers enjoy seeing the different outfits each year. Fox News ruled “Hot or Not.” Host Tina Fey was voted not in her black and pink flowered dress, while other host Amy Poehler was voted hot sporting an all-black dress with geometric cuts. Taylor Swift rocking a black and red strapless a-line dress with a large red bow in the back, and Reese Witherspoon, wearing a teal fitted long dress with small straps, were both fan favorites, like always. A big problem to the public was Jennifer Lawrence’s dress, closely resembling a pillow with some black ribbon tied around it. Senior Madison McCabe says, “I expected more from her since she has been in so many good movies recently, but her dress looked awful even if she’s still beautiful.”gg ar 2

Overall, the Golden Globes gave credit where credit was due for some amazing feature films that came out this past year. For all the people out there who have not seen some of the shows or watched some of the movies, they should start to invest their time in them because they are obviously worth it to have gotten such an honor like a Golden Globe.

Hosts Tina Fey and Any Poehler are known for their crude humor and definitely showed this at the awards. They told Matt Damon, “You’re basically a garbage person” compared to all the stars in the room. They delivered an epic George Clooney joke about his role in Gravity, saying, “Clooney would rather float away and die than spend one moment with a woman his own age.” They mentioned that Matthew McConaughey lost 45 pounds for Dallas Buyers Club, “or what actresses call, being in a movie.” Tina introduced her “son,” Randy, as Mr. Golden Globe, and it turned out to be Poehler dressed as a young boy, who couldn’t wait to get offstage and really wanted to figure out who his father was. Although harsh at times, most got a good laugh at their jokes.

Overall, the awards show was a hit and another ceremony that brought in millions of viewers. People always enjoy seeing celebrities get their different recognitions and how joyful they are when they win. Also, viewers want to see their favorite show, or the movie they thought was best in the past year, get the award they thought fit the production. Having entertaining hosts was another way they brought in viewers. If people enjoy the humor Fey and Poehler create when they are together, more of them would tune in to the show just to get a good laugh. With a great turnout and a fun audience, the 2014 Golden Globes was a hit.
