Bumps, Sets and Spikes to Volleyball Victories

Lead Story: The Varsity team won the Sweet 16 last year, which is two levels from state championship. Coach Anita Dodd hopes they make it to state this year. … Freshman coach Chelsea Johnson is entering her first year as a coach this season. She hopes the freshman team is able to continue improving this season. She says it’s a little scary being a coach for the first time because she doesn’t have an assistant but she is confident in her abilities to lead the team.

In Case You Missed It: The Lady Wolverine finished the month of August with an 11-7 record. … The team closed out the month on a hot streak, compiling a 9-2 record since August 14. The team posted 2-0 match wins over Kell, Northside, Starr’s Mill, River Ridge, Riverwood, and Galloway during that time frame.

Wolverine of the Month: Coach Johnson has designated Parker Hines as freshman team’s captain. “She is not only a good player, but a great teammate and encourager,” said Coach Johnson. Hines got into volleyball for a club team and after the season, she knew it was the sport for her. She also said that she loves every girl on the team, but her biggest competitor is Mary Budwick who played for the volleyball club with her as well. Parker also informed us that her lucky number is six because that is her jersey number for the team this season.

Quotes of the Month: “Volleyball is like a math problem, tough but not impossible.” – Freshman Brooke Schoonmaker

“Tough times never last, but tough people do” – Robert H Schuller (Parker Hines’ favorite quote)

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” – Unknown (Mary Budwick’s favorite quote)

Off the Court: This past summer all of the Woodstock volleyball teams held a carwash in honor of Griffin Schundzel because he has leukemia. The teams raised over $500 towards a treatment for Griffin. Keith Schundzel, Griffin’s dad, is the head coach for women’s volleyball at KSU. Keith did not know about the car wash until KSU had a camp over the summer and invited him to come. When he found out he had many emotions. He said that it was really nice of them because they did not have to do it and they did it out of the kindness of their hearts. He also said that the volleyball community always sticks together.
