Let’s Take ‘Em to the River

Staff Writer: Kendle Flint

On Sept. 26, 2015, nineteen Woodstock High School competition cheerleaders walked onto the mats at Woodland High School to perform their routine for a gym full of people. To prepare for their very first competition of the 2015 fall season, the members of the team were practicing for two hours a day, five days a week.

“All of the practices and workouts really started to stress us out, so team bonding outside of practice really helped us grow closer as a team,” says Kennedy Anderson, a senior on the team.

Another senior on the team is a four-year competition cheerleader, Autumn Broughton. “Autumn is the team’s personality,” says Anna Heid (junior). Autumn is known for, what she calls, “taking ‘em to the river,” which is just a way of huddling up her fellow teammates to get together to say The Lord’s Prayer before they hit the mats and compete.

After Autumn “takes ‘em to the river”, a pep talk is given by the coaches and other members of the team to encourage and motivate the girls before they compete. The team’s motto is “suit up and fight”, and this is exactly what these girls did on Sept. 26.

Everything that the competition cheerleaders do to prepare must have really paid off because the girls had a flawless performance and hit every stunt, which got them first place at their first competition!

See the chart below if you are interested in attending an upcoming performance date.
