Who Is Mr. Smith, Really?

Staff Writers: Luci Dumas and Sarah Bohannon

Mr. Smith, the current principal of Woodstock High School is truly a nice and hospitable person. When you walk in to have a meeting with him, he immediately offers you things like water, coke, and candy.

At one point of the interview he stated, “You can make up anything you want about me to make it more interesting.” We felt no need to do such things. Here is what he spilled about himself during the interview…

How old were you and when did you start teaching?

I started teaching 7th grade math at Woodstock Middle school directly out of UAB. I was 24 years old.

How long have you been teaching?

15 years. My whole life has been coming over that same speed bump every single day.

How long have you been a principal?

Six years in all; Five at Woodstock Middle School and, as you know, this is my first year here.

Do you enjoy being principal?

Love it. It is such a wonderful thing.

What is the reason you want to be in education in the first place?

Because of my amazing educators as a young kid. The main people who influenced me were, Mrs. Mallie Harris, my 3rd grade teacher; Mrs. Charlotte School, my 5th grade teacher; Dr. Denise Goldsmith, my 5th grade science teacher; Mr. Richard Lazenby, my elementary and high school principal; and Mrs. Margaret Little, my high school counselor. They really showed me the compassion an educator can give you and I wanted to be like them and make somebody else’s life better, by being their teacher.

What are some interesting or funny stories you have?

Every day is a funny story, ladies. (Recently), Mr. Manzela was filming us doing the Nae-Nae, and Mrs. Sebring took pictures of us dressed in the wolf costume.

Are you married?

Yes, to the most beautiful woman in the world. Her name is Katie; we met at Woodstock Middle School. She was also a math teacher.

Do you have children?

Yes, Noah is in 2nd grade and Robert is in Pre- K. They are both so wonderful. They are just go, go, go.

What do you so when you are not at school?

I’m always here. Just kidding, I like to spend a lot of time outdoors with my family and I’m really into sports.

What is your favorite professional football team?

Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

What is your favorite college football team?

UAB. I was a big green dragon at UAB for two years. I know you want to see this. (He said, as he pulled out his phone to show us a picture, which we included)

Who is in the Wolverine costume?

Nope, nobody is the wolverine. He just sleeps here at school. You really think there is someone in there? He is real.

However, you were the green dragon.

Well that was fake, but our Wolverine is real, yeah. You think there is a student in there? No, uh-uh. Look, (he said showing us a picture of the Wolverine) that was Friday night.

Yea, but who is in the costume?

Nobody, it is our Wolverine!

So, it is not a costume?

It’s not, it’s real. Why would you think it’s a costume? I don’t understand, no. It’s, it’s real. It’s real.” SGA helps us a lot; we have a couple of people do it, boys and girls.
