Wolverines Prepare for Region Tournament

Staff Writers: Brooke Ventura and Jacob Mims

Lead Story: The Wolverine softball team is having one of their best seasons yet. They have put in hours of hard work to become unstoppable this season. Coach Dempsey and Coach Lack are pushing the girls to do their best on and off the field. The Lady Wolverines finished the regular season with an impressive record of 18-5, and MaxPreps.com has the team ranked No. 15 in the state. … The team will now move on to the region tournament as the No. 3 seed.

In Case You Missed It: During the month of September, the Lady Wolverines went 7-4, with wins over North Forsyth, Sequoyah, Walton, Kennesaw Mountain, Cambridge, Roswell and Milton. Two of the team’s four losses last month came against the top-ranked team in the state, East Coweta.

Wolverine(s) of the Month: Junior third baseman Lexi Solorzano and freshman pitcher/DH Laura Bishop both put up several strong performances this month. Solorzano had three of the team’s five RBIs in a 5-4 home win over Milton in the season finale. Bishop crushed a 3-run homer and pitched a complete game in a 12-1 victory against Roswell. She also recorded the game-winning RBI and the win against Milton.

Quotable: “This season Varsity has competed with some top teams, growing individually as well as a unit. We have really had a solid season to grow on and prepare for post-season play. As our regular season is coming to an end, the Varsity is gearing up for a LONG October. As we move into the region tournament we are working towards not only being in the top four, but really competing to “hang a banner”! This has been  fun group of talented young ladies to coach. We have several players really stepping up in the box with Laura Bishop, Rachael Roddy and Lexi Solórzano hitting with power, while Alisha House and Breann Roper adding speed to the bases. Danielle Rubin and Laura Bishop have been working hard on the mound defensively, as has Reese Dennis in Right Field and Devin Weaver at first base. Maddie Reid at second base and Sofia Tunon behind the plate to anchor the infield. It’s truly been a team effort and atmosphere this year and the coaching staff is positive these attributes will be what is needed to extend our season into the playoffs.  A thank you to the fans and WHS teachers/Staff for coming out and supporting us this Season.  We hope to see the Wolverine Nation at our upcoming Region Tournament hosted at Cherokee High School.” – Coach Dempsey

Off the Diamond: Senior pitcher/outfielder Danielle Rubin is heavily involved in the Friends Club here at Woodstock High School. She will attend the Special Olympics as a volunteer in early October. Ms. Amy Heil, Friends Club sponsor and teacher at WHS, had these glowing words to say about Rubin, “Danielle is one of my most treasured volunteers for the Friend’s Club at Woodstock High School. Danielle has volunteered almost every day to work with my special education students in the classroom. Danielle helps them with classwork, visits with the students, and encourages them to do their best. The students adore her! Danielle makes learning so much fun! I think she would be a wonderful teacher! Danielle is an incredible person with a rare heart and giving soul- she is a truly beautiful person inside and out!”

By the Numbers: 1. Cambridge High School, the No. 1-ranked team in AAAAA, has one loss this season, which came against our Lady Wolverines on Sept. 23. The Wolverines pulled out a hard-fought 5-2 win for, arguably, their biggest win of the season.

Looking Ahead: The region tournament begins at Cherokee High School on October 3, at 3 pm (weather permitting) against Etowah. The top four teams from this double-elimination tournament will advance to the state playoffs, which begin October 14.
