Scarecrows Invade Downtown Woodstock

Staff Writer: Emily Gordon

As the leaves change colors, the weather becomes cooler, tacky Halloween decorations appear in front lawns, pumpkins and fall wreaths appear on the front porch, and coffee lovers drink their pumpkin spice lattes, scarecrows begin to line Main Street.

Anyone who visits downtown Woodstock and strolls Main Street in the month of October is sure to catch a glimpse of the scarecrows that line the sides of the street. Local clubs, groups, businesses and others had the opportunity to invade the Main Street area with their own scarecrow. All they had to do to enter was pay the $20 fee, get their creative juices flowing and put a scarecrow in place by October 1.

Now, the scarecrows are eagerly seeking votes. The general public can observe the scarecrows and vote for their chosen favorite at the Woodstock Visitor’s Center located in the historic Dean’s Store on Main Street. Each vote costs only $1, and the money raised will help keep downtown Woodstock beautiful.

Even more, the winning scarecrow and its creator will win a trophy and bragging rights! Voting closes on October 31. The proceeds from the Scarecrow Invasion will be donated to GROW. This organization, which stands for Green Reaps Opportunity for Woodstock, is the design committee for Main Street Woodstock. You might know them for their beautiful landscaping and holiday decor along Main Street.

If you have driven through downtown lately, you may have noticed a new bench that looks more like a work of art. The proceeds from last year’s Scarecrow Invasion went to the purchase of this beautiful bench. The Scarecrow Invasion is fun for all ages and is a great family activity to do this fall.

The top three scarecrows right now include the entries from Preservation Woodstock, the Dtidwell Art Classes and City on a Hill Methodist Church.
