Sumner takes State

Editor: Madison Block

From the start of the season, Woodstock knew that freshman, Brynne Sumner, would be a big part of the team, but they didn’t know just how big.

Brynne Sumer ran for many years before joining the girls varsity cross country team, so when she came onto the team she was already able to keep up with the others. For the first few weeks of practice, she stayed with the girls, but by middle of the season she was up running with the boys.

Being the top girl runner as a freshman is a huge accomplishment, but being able to keep dropping time per race is an even bigger accomplishment. Brynne kept her times between 19:30 and 19:00 throughout all the races this season, and in her last race (Region 5-AAAAAA) she got a personal record.

Though her times were steady all season, Sumner really showed out at the Region meet, dropping her times in the 18 minute range. Although it was a cold morning running at Boling Park and the field was completely muddy, Sumner was able to get over these obstacles and placed 2nd overall in the girls’ varsity race.

Sumner was beat out of first by 9 seconds, with a time of 18:54. She was just able to edge out Roswell senior who finished .09 behind her.  This was Sumner’s best race of the season, so she left the meet with a new personal record. With this time and high placement, Sumner will be heading to the state meet to run as an individual.

The state meet will be held on November 7th at Carrollton High School. The girls and boys Woodstock cross country team looks forward to watching Brynne at state, as she will be the only one representing the Wolverines.
