Elves Club Prepares with “Pennies for Presents”

Staff Writer: Claudia Miklosik

Some people say the Christmas season begins when Halloween ends. Others are baffled that the holidays are being mentioned before Thanksgiving has even arrived! One club that believes it is never too early to get in the holiday spirit is Woodstock’s Elves Club. Elves Club works year-round to raise money to buy presents for local children whose may not afford them when the holidays roll by.

This year, Elves Club has made the return of their fundraiser dubbed “Pennies for Presents”. It is a simple concept and makes it easy for anyone to give. Every morning, as you scribble in answers to last night’s homework, a festive red bucket is passed around your first period class.

If you have a little change to spare, just drop it in! The jingle of coins will be translated to presents, which equal to lots of smiles given by grateful students from Sixes, Carmel, and Woodstock Elementary.

The fundraiser ends on November 20, the Friday before Thanksgiving Break. When students return from break, the Elves Club will repay the first period class with the most money raised with one of the best gifts to receive: food.

Calculus and pre-calculus teacher Mr. Oglesby himself will take on the title of chef. On the menu is a gourmet breakfast, with items like biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, bacon, and more.

Mr. Oglesby has been the club’s sponsor teacher for the past two years. He says that that organizing the fundraisers and the Christmas party itself requires a lot of hard work, but it is all more than worth it in the end.

After going on a Walmart shopping trip, checking off the wish lists of students, wrapping presents, and decorating Woodstock’s Media Center, the Elves are ready for the big day. Face-painting, crafts, music, games, and even Santa Claus himself will be part of the celebration, held on December 16.

President Julianne Karnes, senior, says seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as “priceless”. Mr. Oglesby agrees, remarking that, “It’s all about maximizing the Christmas cheer and minimizing the bah-humbug.” AP Calculus survivors will understand the pun, but you do not have to be a math-wiz to grasp the Elves Club’s good-hearted intentions.

Stay tuned for an article about this year’s Christmas party in next month’s issue. In the meantime, make sure to check under couch cushions and in the drier for loose change! The Elves Club truly appreciates your donations, and they all go towards a great cause.
