Tis’ the Downtown Season

Editor: Madison Block

Tis the season for the city of Woodstock to put on all of their parades and holiday concerts, while continuing the usual Farmers Market and enjoying the holiday shopping in the downtown boutiques.

As the seasons change, the Woodstock Farmers Market is beginning to feature a winter market season. Some of the winter season foods include sweet potatoes, squash, a variety of nuts, and baked goods. If you’re lucky, you will make it on time for some hot chocolate and candy canes that will be passed out in the morning. These featured winter markets will not be here much longer, so come out and support your local farmers on November 7, 14, and 21 and December 5. The market hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Market Street in Downtown Woodstock.

The last Friday Night Live show, December 4, will be “Christmas in Downtown” where you will have the perfect chance to listen to holiday music while doing some Christmas shopping. This is not something you’re going to want to miss, Santa has already RSVPd!

Following the Holiday concert, that Saturday December 5 is the Christmas Jubilee! The whole day will be filled with holiday fun. Start the day off at The Elm Street Theater and enjoy a “Christmas Carol” play. Afterwards, the 2nd annual Woodstock Christmas run will be raced just before the Parade of Lights at 5:30. You can grab your fleece lined leggings and Santa hat for a cool night run, and then sit and enjoy the parade!

After enjoying the passing Christmas lights and getting more candy canes from the parade then you can eat, there will be a holiday festival in the park. Santa will make another visit and help the mayor light the huge Christmas tree. There will be fire pits set up for marshmallow roasting, as well as a place where you can donate an unwrapped toy for a family in need. The Woodstock Jaycees Christmas toy Drive helped put all of this on, so do your part and help a family in need.

Once the festival begins to die down, there will be a movie in the park starting at about 7:30-8:00. The movie title has not been announced yet, but look out for one of your favorite holiday movies such as Elf or Home Alone!

To end the year on a giving and happy note, Woodstock will be holding an event called “Shop with a Hero.” Less fortunate families or those facing some sort of financial difficulty will be taken to go shopping with our men and women in uniforms. Donations are welcome and always are appreciated. If you want more information on where you donate, go to http://www.woodstockga.gov/index.aspx?nid=484 and share your Christmas spirit with another family.

With all these exciting activities going on in Downtown Woodstock, do not forget to check out all of the local restaurants, shops, and boutiques while you are down here! Enjoy some holiday shopping at Boutiques such as Brooklynn’s, Branches, or Dress up and then go sit under the Christmas light, filled trees with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate from Copper Coin Coffee!

Happy Holidays!
