No Shave November

Staff Writer: Grant Witten

Men’s Freedom Awareness Month. Maybe known better as No Shave November. Regardless, November is no doubt the scruffiest month of the entire year. It is the month designated for men to have the chance to celebrate their God-given manliness, in a way that would never otherwise be allowed by their counterparts (for lack of a better term). For once, a man has the chance to truly assert dominance over the next without having to mutter a single word. The facial hair speaks for them.

No Shave November may look as if it is an easy thing to do; however, it is in no way a small feat and it is most certainly not suggested for the faint-hearted. Many will attempt it. Unfortunately, only a few will make it out the other side unscathed and untrimmed.

Many students at Woodstock went into this November just a child, hoping to come out of it a man. I roamed the halls of Woodstock, hoping to find some of the best facial hair, and although the pickings were very slim, I was able to find a few brave souls who managed to endure the month-long battle.

The first who I spoke to was junior Jesse Dalfonso. He told me a few stories about his journey throughout No Shave November; however, the part that truly spoke to me was what he said at the end of his interview. Jesse told me, “Grant. I was nothing before this month. I have grown so much in just these short 30 days, and I am now a better man than I ever was before No Shave November was a part of my life.”

I managed to find one more person who had survived the month. Junior Corey Long said to me, “If there’s one thing that I have learned from these last 30 days, it is that it’s not about the size of the beard that you can grow, it’s about how you use what you’ve got.”

Both of these gentlemen have truly been inspirations to me. I hope to grow into at least half the person who each of these men are today.
