The 73rd Golden Globe Awards: Finally An Entertaining Award Show

Staff Writer: Charles Sorensen

I have seen quite a number of award shows over the years, both for this news site and for my own personal interest, and I can say that most of them are very boring. Not to offend the men and women who work hard to put on amazing performances, they of course deserve a night to have their contributions honored. However most award shows, such as the Emmys, Oscars, and Grammys, tend to be very by the book with little innovation or entertainment considered. This year I expected to see more of the same with the Golden Globes, but I was surprised when I saw some genuine comedy and charm to the show along with professionalism shown by (almost) everyone. I can say that this may be one of the better shows I have seen in recent memory.

Host of The 73rd Golden Globes Ricky Gervais

The key to this award show succeeding so much may be due to the fantastic host, Ricky Gervais. Mr. Gervais constantly roasted celebrities whenever he had a chance during the show. Some of his highlights included when he included lines like “Our next presenter is the most respected actor in the room, that isn’t saying much. Please welcome Morgan Freeman” and when he ended the show by saying “Thank you, I’m afraid that’s it we’re out of time. For myself and Mel Gibson, shalom.”

Many of the funniest moments from the whole night came from Gervais and how he did not discriminate towards any celebrity. He targeted everyone and made sure that while he was offensive, he was just the right amount to be funny without being a complete jerk. There was a definite feeling that he went of script multiple times and went his own way many times during the show. Of course, when it came to actually introducing and presenting nominees and awards, Gervais was professional and did his job greatly. These factors definitely prove that he should be considered for any future award show hosting jobs,

However, getting back to the main subject, this is an awards show front and center. While there were not any unique award categories, both TV and movie categories were given a good number of categories and equally represented. In the movie category the best performance by an actor and actress went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant and Brie Larson for The Room, respectively. Best movie was also taken by The Revenant in the drama section and The Martian in the comedy or musical section. In the TV category, Jon Hamm took home the best actor for his show Mad Men and best actress went to Taraji P. Henderson for the show Empire. There are more categories such as best supporting actors and actresses, directors, original score, and even best original song, but I’d prefer to keep it to the bigger awards. If you would like to see a full list of the nominees and winners there is a link below to the official website.

I was also happy to find other people that had a similar opinion to mine. Once I had found people who had actually seen the awards they were eager to share their opinions. One student I had questioned said “I was actually kinda surprised that it was as good as it was. I had watched a previous award show with my mom once and it was boring, but this one was a lot better. That Ricky guy was really funny whenever he insulted someone”. A teacher form a River Ridge I interviewed said “I was excited to see that Leo won again, because The Revenant was amazing and I hope this finally gets him an Oscar. But overall I thought it was funny to watch, especially when Taraji refused to get off stage when she was called off, I love her”. Therefore, in my humble opinion, I believe that this award show was a great success and I hope it sets a standard for the large amount of upcoming events throughout the year.
