2-Peat County Champs

Editor: Madison Block

Lead Story: After a countless number of laps, weeks of preparing, and months of waiting, the Woodstock Wolverine swim team has done it again. On Monday, January 25, the wolverines attended the county meet, and left county champions. The lady Wolverines placed 1st out of 6 teams, and the boys placed 3rd out of 6 teams. With the numbers combined though, they were able to pull out on top for the second year in a row. Along with the huge win, many swimmers made new personal records and many gained new state cuts. Now there is just one more meet for the Wolverines to look forward to, the state meet.

In case you missed it: Now that the season is over, the swimmers are all looking back on their accomplishments throughout the season. The month of January was another month of success. On Jan. 9, the team competed with 5 other teams at The Spear and Shield Invite. At this meet the lady wolverines took 1st place, the boys fell short in 2nd, but they still came out with an overall win. Following the week after, on Jan. 15, the team hosted the WHS invite meet against 2 other teams. This was a quick and fun meet, where the boys and girls placed 1st. In the most recent meet, the Wolverines hosted a ‘Senior meet’ so they could all be recognized one last time. The girls took 1st place, like usual, and the boys placed 2nd. It was a good end to the season, although it is sad to say goodbye to eighteen seniors this year.

Wolverines of the Month: The wolverine(s) of the month for January go out to one boy and one girl who really showed out in the county swim meet. Michael McDowell, a sophomore, returned for the last and most important meet of the season, after being out due to a knee injury all season. He came back and swam stronger than ever, scoring in all 4 of his races. The second Wolverine of the month is Paula Ruiz, a senior. After swimming on the team for 4 years, Ruiz finally scored in her last meet ever. She scored in an individual race, as well as on a relay at county. These two swimmers put forth so much effort and dedication this season, especially at the county meet, making them the most deserved swimmers to be the Wolverines of the month.

Quotable: “To all of my swimmers, thank you for making me the luckiest coach in the county. The help, support and effort building up to the county meet has been tremendous. This is a special group and you deserve the success that you have achieved. I am proud to be your coach. I hope you take a moment to savor this accomplishment.”

-Coach Gillin

Outside of the Pool: Although a little different than our usual “outside of the pool” sections that would include community service or college talk, one of our very own swimmers was invited to audition for the show Jeopardy. AJ Cox, junior, is the boy genius of our school. You can ask him a question about a topic no one else has heard of, and he will know the answer right away. However, his useless knowledge and strange brain can finally be put to work as he travels to New York in March for the audition!
