March Madness Upsets

Staff Writer: Jacob Mims

With the tournament starting March 17, there was a pretty big surprise that there were many upsets and close games on the first day of the tournament and showed that this year’s tournament would be filled with surprises and great basketball.

One of the upsets came when 11-seed Wichita State (who had to win a game on Tuesday to even play in this game) faced off with 6-seed Arizona. By halftime the score was a shocking 31-19 lead by Wichita State. Arizona’s coach Sean Miller was seen with his white dress shirt soaked in sweat by halftime. He did change his shirt but that seemed to not do a thing because he had the same results by the end of the game according to http://www.nytimes.com. The Shockers came out of the game with a victory with a score of 65-55.

A game that seemed easily predictable was the Duke-UNC Wilmington game. Duke was losing by the end of first half played second half harder and closed the game on a 14-0 run for the 93-85 victory. Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski said about the team, “It’s really beautiful to watch. It’s more beautiful if you don’t have to play against them.” written by http://www.nytimes.com.

This season hasn’t shown much separation from underdogs and favorites, this one of the most unpredictable seasons ever. Number 1-overall seed Kansas destroyed Austin Peay 107-79. By halftime they had a 20-point lead. Fellow No. 1-seed Virginia won their first round game 81-45, but there was a moment of drama in this matchup. Coach Tony Bennett for Virginia fell to the floor from feeling dizzy during the game. The 46-year-old, after being helped to the locker room, said the cause of the fall was dehydration. The coach turned out to be fine and didn’t need any medical attention. He said, “I think I’ve just been a little under the weather the last couple of days and I think I was a bit dehydrated” the coach said “When you’re squatting down and get up quick, I just grayed out or blacked out a little bit.” sourced from http://www.nytimes.com.

The craziest game of the tournament came in Round 2 as Texas A&M barely beat Northern Iowa in a game that went double overtime. Texas A&M trailed Northern Iowa by 14 points with less than a minute to play before staging a miracle comeback. This was a tragic turn of events for Northern Iowa as they used a miracle half-court shot to defeat Texas in the first round of the tournament two nights earlier.

Final Four

The final four brackets include the No. 2 seed Villanova Wildcats, the No. 2 seed Oklahoma Sooners, No. 1 seed North Carolina Tar Heels, and No. 10 seed Syracuse Orange. People are surprised that Syracuse has made it this far in the tournament, but there is something to be said for getting hot at the right time. On Sunday, Virginia was defeated by Syracuse after the Orange overcame a 14-point second half deficit to claim the victory. Trevor Cooney said, “I did dream this, but it was hard to . . . I don’t know, I’m at a loss for words right now.’’ Stated by http://www.ncaa.com.
