Running With the Pack

Editor: Madison Block

Lead Story: After many months of training in the frigid temperatures, along with the extremely hot temperatures, the track team has had multiple successes this season. The Woodstock track team started off strong, and is proving to stay strong. This past week, Mar. 23, the JV Track and Field team competed in the County meet at Etowah high school. The boys track team placed 4th and the girls team placed 5th. Some of the runners were able to place high enough, jump far enough or make times fast enough to qualify for the region and sectional meet. Now that the JV team has the county meet locked away, the varsity team will participate in county on Wednesday, Mar. 30.

In case you missed it: In the past month, the Track and Field team has participated in 6 meets ranging from meets at Etowah to Roswell, and ranging from 2 to 8 teams. Some of the meets, such as the dual meets against River Ridge and Etowah are of lesser importance, however the Wolverine Invitational and Roswell relay meets were 2 that the Wolverines really showed out. At the Wolverine invitational the boys track team placed 6th and the girls’ team placed 6th as well. On Mar. 19, at the Roswell relays, the boys placed 12 out of 25 and the girls placed 11 out of 23.

Wolverine of the month: The wolverine of the month for March is freshman, Anna Burnett. Coming in as a freshman is always pretty scary, however, for Burnett that didn’t phase her at all. At the meet held at Walton, on Mar. 12, Burnett got the new school record in the 800 meter dash. She ran it in a whopping 2:24.65! This record was not an easy one to beat and many past runners, including seniors, have tried to beat it and have not succeeded. Along with her track accomplishments, Burnett is also involved in cross country, cheerleading, and she is very into her academics as well.

Quotable: “It has been a rebuilding year for us. We lost many talented runners in the last 2 years, and are just looking to do better in the meets to come. It will be interesting to see how we do at the Varsity county meet and regional meet.” –Coach Glasper

Off the beaten track: Although it may seem like all the track team does is run in circles and throw discs, many of them are actually involved in other extracurricular activities. Large amounts of the team are involved in other sports such as cross country, swimming, and even football. Along with the athletics, many of them are included in clubs such as beta club, NHS club, and Interact club. Being a student athlete means you are always involved and dedicated to being the best you can be at everything you do. The track and field team is a great example of what being a student athlete means.
