Track and Field Wrap Up

Editor: Madison Block

As the season comes to an end for most of the track team, a few special runners have made their way all the way to the State meet. Out of the whole track team, only three people made the state team, and it just so happens that those three are freshman girls. The three that will be competing are Brynne Sumner (3200 meter and 800 meter), Anna Burnett (800 meter), and Sam Konop (Pole vault). This is a new and exciting thing to see for the Wolverines. Despite not having some of their older runners make it, the coaches and team are excited because having three new runners make it to state shows that there is only room for improvement for the Wolverines in the years to come.

The girls State meet will be held at Albany High School May 5-7. Come out and support your lady Wolverines!

In case you missed it:

The region track meet was held at home on April 22 and 23. Many runners made new PR’s at this meet, including Corey Champion who ran the 1600 meter at 4:28. Along with Champion, Brynne Sumner and Anna Burnett both shattered the school record with a 2:16 in the 800 meter. These runners all got themselves a place in the Sectional meet, in addition to Alex Petz in the high jump, Kennedy Montgomery in shot put, and Sam Konop in the pole vault.

The sectional meet was held on April 30 at Roswell High School. Although only a few runners participated in the meet, the whole Wolverine track team was still there to cheer on their teammates. Just when we thought that times could not get faster, Brynne Sumner proved us wrong. She ran the 3200 meter at a new best time, and became the first state qualifier on the team for the day. A few events later, the next state qualifier came along. Sam Konop, freshman, qualified in the pole vault. Champion and Petz both brought all they could to their events, but unfortunately their seasons ended at this meet. Champion ended the season by placing 9th in the 1600 meter, with a new PR of 4:28. Petz jumped a 6-0 flat on his high jump event. Lastly, alongside Sumner, Anna Burnett also qualified for the state meet in the 800 meter. The girls ran neck and neck the whole race, and both with be attending Albany for the state meet.
