What Happened During Special Olympics

Daniela Salame
On Friday, October 7, the annual special Olympics were held at river ridge high school. I had the privilege to tag along with the Friends Club and experience it myself, and it was one of the best experiences to see the excitement in their eyes when playing the games set up for them.
There was soccer, face painting, baseball, and of course, the famous race. The biggest smiles spread around the crowd as Woodstock’s very own student held the torch up to commend the special needs students taking part in that days event, and all those who weren’t.
Friends club is made for students who enjoy spending time with and helping their peers with mental and physical disabilities feel a part of their community. They take time out of their days to make sure they feel important and that they have a friend that they can count on.
Special Olympics is an amazing opportunity for all of the special needs students to show everyone that disabilities don’t disable them from doing what everyone else can do, and I hope I can hop on the bus again next year to live through the joy-filled day all over again.
