Softball, Volleyball Seasons Come to an End While Girls Basketball Getting Started

Staff Writers: Ramon Elortondo and Shane Zachos

Lead Story: The lady Wolverines volleyball and softball both come to an end after a great season. Both Coach Dodd (volleyball) and Coach Dempsey (softball) must be very proud of how hard their teams fought this year. The volleyball team went to the state playoffs for the 7th straight year and got fourth in region. It was a great accomplishment for these girls. The season ended when the girls lost to North Gwinnet in a close 5 games. They almost got the job done but in the 5th game they lost 15-11 it was very tightly competitive. For softball they lost in a tough game 11-1. Even though both teams fought very hard in their seasons and improved greatly throughout the year, the season has come to a sad ending.

In Case You Missed It: The girls cross country squad traveled all the way to Florida for a meet with over 20 schools around the country. Woodstock ran the fastest times out of our county, beating out even our closest rival Etowah High School. In the county race held here in Cherokee county, your Wolverines came with two top five finishes by Sophomores Brynne Sumner and Anna Burnett. Both runners had sub-20 minute times, with Brynne running a lightning fast 19:17.59 5000 meter run. For the Softball Team, they got knocked out in the first round of state when playing a great East Coweta team. The volleyball team also got knocked out of state when they played in a heart breaking five set game in the first round of state to North Gwinnett. Don’t worry Wolverines, well be back stronger than ever next year, but we want to give a huge congratulations from the entire Wolverine Times.

The Wolverine of the Month: October’s special wolverine is the sophomore cross country athlete Anna Bailey. She comes from a great running family with her brother leading the men in best times on cross country. When speaking to her in a interview, she mentioned that she’s been running ever since she can remember. Eight years running, she’s gotten all the way down to a 20:12 5k time. Her favorite pre-run snack is animal crackers. She says the team gets along very well, and wants continue running in college one day.

Statistics: For the girls 5,000 meter run Woodstock’s own Brynne Summer got second place with a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds. She earned two points on this run and made Woodstock very proud. Also in the girls 5,000 meter, Anna Burnette came in 4th and Anna Bailey wounded up finding sixth place. Mackenzie Keaton ended her high school career with over 2,000 digs…what an amazing accomplishment for this team vet.

Quotable: Head Basketball Coach for the Lady Wolverines Julie Crowe commented on the potential of this years team, “I think we have the potential to make it all the way to the Elite Eight, and we hopefully can maybe even take it to the Championship game.” When asking about how she thought the team would be affected by the loss of the Suttons and Kennedy Montgomery, coach quoted “I think we’ll definitely lose some senior leadership from them, but I expect our young players to really step up and make a difference on the season.”

Off the Field: The lady wolverines basketball team has been doing conditioning training for the season ahead. Coach Crowe has been putting those girls to work on the track outside. They had a whole set up where 5 girls ran a lap and another girl was doing sit ups. These wolverines are looking to run out the competition on the court.

Looking Ahead: With tryouts starting, that means that the basketball season is about to begin. Both men and ladies have been conditioning hard to get ready and in shape. They’re` trying to be on a good show, as the whole school will be packing the house in support to cheer on both teams. Hopefully this year, the teams can put together a winning season like Coach Crowe said.
