Advice from Kylee

Hi, I have a question that maybe you could answer. I have a really hard time concentrating, and that’s a pretty bad thing. Whenever I read a book, my mind starts to wander after a while, and then I’ll end up reading the same sentence 50 times in a row or something. It’s almost as if I can’t read anymore. It’s really hard for me to focus, too, when someone is just speaking to me. My mind just wanders and there’s just no way to stop it. Please help, I would like to enjoy reading again.

From the way you’re wording this, it seems like this is something that started recently. I would recommend first trying to get more sleep. Your mind could be wandering due to being tired. Take non habit-forming melatonin about 20 minutes before you go to sleep every night, and it will help you fall asleep faster and sleep better. Also, go on a run every afternoon to tire yourself out and get a better rest.

Your mind could also be unfocused due to something worrying you, or some big event happening. Is there a big test coming up? A concert you’re excited to go to? Your mind could be distracted by those things. Try and find the cause of the distraction and find out how to solve it.

Hello! I have a question about keeping organized. See, I have several classes with lots of different units and notes, and I need to find a way to keep organized in them so that I don’t loose anything. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

Well, keeping organized is very important when it comes to your classes. One thing you can do is get a separate folder for each class. One for science, one for math, etc. Have separate sections in each folder where you put worksheets, notes, graded quizzes and tests, unfinished items, and homework. Make sure each folder is a different color so that you can tell them apart, and each section is labeled. After that, it’s really about keeping up the organization and not shoving things in your folders when you’re in a rush.

Recently, I’ve been really stressed trying to keep up with my work. I have several hours of homework every day, and I just don’t have enough time to do it all. Do you know any way that I can get this under control?

The first thing you need to do is set up a schedule. The one that I currently use goes like this.

4:00- Get home

4:25-5:45- Go on a walk

6:00-8:00- Homework. 10 minute breaks every 30 minutes.

8:00-8:30- Dinner

8:35-9:00- Finish any last homework, or relax if I am done.

9:00-9:30- Anything on the phone, like Instagram, YouTube, or texting.

9:30- Go to bed

If you set up a schedule and stick with it every day, you’ll find yourself feeling less stressed. You will feel like you’re getting more control of your life and it will help you be in a better mood, as well as make you more successful in school.
