College Football Playoff Wrap-up

Staff Writer: Shane Zachos

Washington- Going up against the powerhouse team Alabama, not much was expected from the huskies but they put up a decent fight against the Crimson Tide. Jake Browning had an excellent start to the game then as the game went on it seemed like the great Alabama defense adapted to the huskies offense. As soon Ryan Anderson got his pick six it started the tide to roll and it was rough. The huskies defense I thought played a well game with their pass rush and coverage on two of the most athletic receivers in the nation (ArDarius Stewart and Calvin Ridley) The defense only allowed 17 points (not counting the pick 6) however, they could not stop the running game. Bo Scarbrough brought the house with that great offensive line rushed for over 170 yards and 2 touchdowns. The run game was in favor and when it wasn’t scoring touchdowns it put the Huskies in a bad position on the field. The future is still very bright for this team and I believe that could make another top 10 run next season. When I asked Camden Vaughn, class of 2020, on how the huskies played he said “I’d say Washington played decent, with their defense they played good but their offense struggled.”

Ohio State- Ohio State really was a disappointment not only to me but to many big ten fans as well as many others. It seemed to me that not only their opponent outplayed them but they looked as Freshmen Cal Bonner says “scared to win”. The Ohio State offense could not get the ball to move and when they could… they would have a turnover waiting for them. The running game wasn’t really working for the buckeyes, they were held under 100 yards for just the second time this season. Then when they tried to get things going with the pass game, it wasn’t pretty. J.T. Barret went 19-33, threw 2 picks, and only had 127 passing yards. The real question of that night was did the buckeyes really not come to play that bad or was Clemson just ready to put on the beat down. I believe that both those assumptions are correct, Clemson to me played their best game of the season on both sides of the ball but at the same time Ohio State did not come as ready as they usually play. This was a very unusual outcome to a game for very successful head coach Urban Meyer but I’m sure this loss will not phase the mighty Buckeyes in their next season.

Alabama- Many people, including myself thought the powerhouse would take home their 17th

National Title but it didn’t exactly work out that way. Being a Tide fan it has been a great season watching that defense only allow 11 points per game and see our true freshmen QB go to work in tough situations. Against the Huskies I felt like the offense may have struggled at times but Jalen made a couple throws and they got the running game going with Bo Scarbrough which was the main reason the ball was moving. Bo had 2 rushing touchdowns and a season high 180 yards rushing. Hurts being who he is struggled a lot but the crimson tide defense was able to shut down the very talented Washington offense (after their first touchdown). Now the very intense title game. After leading 14-0 in the first, the Alabama offense seemed to slow down with new offensive coordinator Mike Sarkisian calling the shots. Even though the very tough Alabama defense seemed to be doing a decent job holding down Desean Watson until a fire was lit in the second quarter. Bo was having another pretty good game with already 2 rushing touchdowns in the first half. However in the 3rd quarter he seemed hurt and was helped off the field and would not return. It was later said he has a broken leg. In the 3rd and 4th quarter Jalen Hurts and the whole tide offense would not get anything going and the Clemson Tigers began to march back into the game. With 2 minutes left in the game Hurts made a huge play for the Crimson Tide scoring on a scramble run. To give Alabama the lead with about a minute 45 left. Watson drove down the throat of the defense and scored with one second remaining. It was a heart broken loss for Nick Saban and the Alabama team and fans but as usual hopes will be high again for the Tide.

Clemson: The tigers came ready to play in their last two games of the year, Dabo Sweeny (head coach) was all in with his players and everything seemed to click. In the game against the buckeyes, it was simply a beat down. The tigers won in every category: Passing game, running game, turnover battle. You name it, Clemson won it. Even though Watson had two early interceptions he came back strong and finished 23-36 259 yards and one touchdown, also DeSean rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns. The defense of the Tigers may have been the reason they blew out the might Buckeyes. They only allowed 86 rushing yards and held J.T. under 200 total yards of offense. In the title game Clemson had a very slow start but once their QB got the fire going the team followed. The defense did a great job containing Jalen Hurts in the passing game. Bo Scarbrough had a great start to the game but the clemson defense started to adapt. In the end, Watson and his offense led the way with a game winning touchdown with 1 second remaining and It was over. Congrats to all Clemson fans and players for winning the 3rd ever College Football Playoff.
