Celtics Future: Bright or Fading Away?

Staff Writer: Brenden Foo

his NBA offseason has been the craziest offseason of all-time. There has already been multiple trades and drafts. The Sixers traded for the No. 1 pick to draft Markelle Fultz, and the Lakers draft Lonzo Ball just as Lavar said was going to happen. There was also the trading of Jimmy Butler for Zach Lavine, Chris Paul to the Rockets, Paul George to the Thunder, and D’angelo Russell to the Nets. But the team that made the most impressive and valuable moves would have to be the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics were able to acquire some very talented players over this offseason. They were able to land Kyrie Irving, who is one of the best and most driven point guards in the league. Considering he said, “No alarm clock needed. My passion wakes me up,” shows that he is one of the most passionate players in the league All the Celtics had to give up was the Brooklyn 2019 pick, Jae Crowder, and Isaiah Thomas. Thomas, who was a key player on the Celtics, wouldn’t be much help considering he will be out until the All-Star break.

They also were able to pick up another all-star caliber in Gordon Hayward. Hayward had a breakout season on the Utah Jazz, leading them to the second round of the playoffs last season. The Celtics didn’t even have to give up any of their players for him. Hayward was a free agent this offseason and decided to sign with the Celtics over the Jazz. Since Hayward and Irving played together when they were younger they already built up some chemistry, so they have a chance to be one of the best back courts in the league.

They were also able to acquire a solid big man

from the Pistons in Marcus Morris. This will allow them to actually have a presence in the paint considering Al Horford is more of a Shooting center. They did have to give up a very valuable defensive player in Avery Bradley, who was one of if not the best defender on the Celtics. An Eastern conference Scout said, “To me, Avery Bradely would have been a must keep”, which shows how important a piece Bradley was to the Celtics. This could have been a major blow to the Celtic’s defense, but Gordon Hayward is an excellent defender who will fill the gap left by trading Avery Bradley. Kyrie Irving is also a decent defender which will be a big step up on defense from Isaiah Thomas who struggled to guard other point guards due to the fact that he is considered undersized.
