Woodstock Basketball Having a Strong Year

The Woodstock Wolverines are having a really great season this year. They have worked hard throughout the year, and it shows in their record. Their record overall is a solid 12-10 while having a region record of 4-3. Assistant Coach Michea said, “This is the closest I have ever seen a Woodstock boys team be in a long time”, this shows how close this team is and how well they can work together. In late December and early January, the Wolverines were able to put together a nice string of three wins in a row. In their game against Cumberland Christian (12/29), they were able to clinch a win in overtime in a very close game having an end score of 78-83. The next day against Richard Harvey (12/30), they were able to win another nail biter in overtime 76-72. The Wolverines were down by 11 points with a little bit over a minute left. e every possession and came down and hit four deep threes in a row. Then on the last possession of the fourth quarter, junior guard Reginald Fulton was able to hit a clutch buzzer-beating three to send Woodstock into overtime and allow them to take over and win the game. I asked Reginald how he felt after hitting that shot and he said, “It was an amazing feeling having all my teammates jumping around me and pushing me congratulating me on the shot.”

Lassiter also gave them a battle but they were still able to come out on top. It was a tough fought game through all four quarters, but the Wolverines were able to come out on top with a three-point win with a very close final score of 59-56. Then in very late January, the Wolverines were able to win two out of the three region games that they have

played. They were able to easily breeze past by the last seeded Lassiter (1/23) beating them by a whopping 18 points. They were also to get the best of the Cherokee Warriors (1/26) who beat the Wolverines last time they played at Cherokee. It was a very close game with Woodstock only being able to beat the Warriors by a very small margin of 4 points with a final score of 64-60. Then the Wolverines had to play the Etowah Eagles the very next day on January 27. The Eagles are having a very impressive season this year. With a huge number of eight seniors, they were able to put together an 18-2 record before they played the Wolverines. Although the Wolverines were missing a starter in Senior power forward

Woodstock was leading the whole game until they went down late in the fourth, and they just could not find a way to close the deficit and lost by four points. The Wolverines have three very important region games coming up.  They have two games against Walton on January 30th and February 1. Then after both of those games they play the Roswell Hornets for their last regular season game on February 2. If they are able to come out on both of the Walton games, they will be able to grab the second seed in the region and will automatically have a spot in the state playoffs.

The Lady Wolverines are also having a very impressive season with an impressive record of 12-8 and match the Wolverines with a region record of 4-3. The Lady Wolverines were able to go on an impressive 5-game winning streak during the month of December. On December 15, they easily beat Kell with a 21-point win having a final score of 46-67. They beat the next three teams easily as well starting with West Forsyth (12/16). They beat them with a score of 61-39. They also destroyed Paulding County (12/21) with a score of 59-26. Even with all of these great wins, their most impressive on this win streak was win they played against Chattahoochee. The Lady Wolverines were able to hold them to a jaw-dropping 15 points, beating them with a final score of 68-15. Assistant Coach Malory Ranfos said after the game, “This is the best that I have ever seen these girls ever play together,” which shows how good of a game that the Lady Wolverines played.

The Lady Wolverines have been having some struggles throughout January. They have only won three of the eight total games that they had played that month so far. The only thing that was an upside about those three wins that they were able to obtain was that every single one of them were region wins for the Lady Wolverines. They were able to beat the Lady Trojans both times they played them on January 5 and January 23. The second meeting between them was a very close game, the Lady Wolverines only winning it 38-33. They were also able to beat their rivals, the Etowah Eagles, in a blowout win on January 27. They were able to double the score of the Lady Eagles, beating them 60-29. The Lady Wolverines also finish the regular season with a string of three region games. Head Girls coach Hughes states, “I think that we will be able to win out, I believe my girls have the dedication and skills to do it.”
