Technology: Saving Grace or Toxic Distraction

Staff Writer: Selene Gomez

Ever since technology and smart phones began to get popular in the U.S there has been a significant change in the way that students learn. Because of this new technology, there has been a great deal of problems students will face throughout their school life that can and will affect the way they work in the future. Technology is like the Ying-Yang sign coming with good and bad factors like everything else in the world. It can help you stay on track, yet it can also distract you from the important things in your life.

A junior student, Daniel Mondragon, says, “Technology is basically the devil, distracting you from your life. I went a month without my phone and I noticed a drastic change in my work life.” Daniel continued to say that he felt that his phone held him back from doing the important things in life. He concluded by saying “Going without it may have been the best thing I ever did.”

Another source Jennifer Cogdill, a Woodstock High School Media Center Specialist, describes technology as being beneficial at times. “I feel like technology in moderation is the key to success, and that students need to learn when it’s time to put it away and pay attention in class.” In this current generation students are forgetting when it’s time to put down the phone and learn, however when they do great things can happen.

Technology, like all things, has its pros and cons. For example, bullying, it’s all around you some people ignore it and some people stand up to it. When it comes to cyber bullying technology plays a big part on this, it allows people to freely express their feelings and thoughts, however many people take advantage of that and make inappropriate comments about other people that results in feelings being hurt, self-esteems being put down, and many more problems. It may have its perks but in 2011 about one million children were victims of cyber bullying. Technology was made to make our lives easier but with good always comes bad, and cyber-bullying is part of it.

On the other hand, technology. Can be very beneficial to students and teachers. For instance, if a student doesn’t get an online assignment done in class and its due at midnight then the student can work on it at home on canvas and have it ready for the

Canvas is a new app that allows students to keep up with school work

next day. Canvas is now being used all over Cherokee county, and it’s making it easy for students to work on and turn in assignments outside of school. It has many features to it that help keep student up to date with their assignments. Its features include an assignments page where you can access all the things that you are doing in class, an announcement tab where you can see all the upcoming assignments, tests, and quizzes. Canvas can really help you when it comes to school and you will always be able to access it from home or school as long as you have internet.

Technology also has a grand effect on attention spans. The lack of attention that most students have while a teacher is going over a lesson is impacted by how much a student looks at his/her phone. Students are pulling out their phones during lessons and not paying attention and when the test rolls around they fail and ask, “Why did I fail?” Teachers from all around are tired of all the excuses, “You didn’t explain it enough.” or “You just don’t know how to teach.” When the real problem is their phones and lack of attention.

To fix this problem, teachers have gone out of their way and purchased phone pockets. Ms. Hooks, a 10th grade literature teacher, thinks that they have significantly changed the work ethic in her class. Although it is an option to use the pockets, they are still effective when they are in use. “The phone pockets have impacted the students in a positive way, and the results lie in the assignments being turned in. They are significantly better, therefore when students don’t have their phones they are able to pay attention in class without having any distractions.”

Technology has affected the work environment so much in class rooms that teachers are having to buy these pockets because students can’t let go of their phones for just a few minutes to accomplish their class work without getting distracted. However, there are students taking advantage of technology available at school like the lab, laptop kart, and iPads that are all available in the library. During lunches the lab is open to all students who need to catch up or work on class assignments. It is always full of students working on homework and classwork. Having these items available has been a grand help to students who don’t have access to the internet at home.
