How ‘The Voice’ Changed Melanie Martinez’ Life

Staff Writer: Jay Terry

Melanie Martinez was born Apr. 28, 1995 (23) in Astoria, Queens. She was raised in Baldwin, New York. Growing up she was very artistic. Her parents did not care if she made a mess if she came out of it with a beautiful project. Beautiful enough to hang up on the refrigerator. She began to write poetry when she was in kindergarten. This eventually led to her starting to write songs and music. As a result, she began to learn the guitar. Then, she started to feel that the guitar was boring for her “brand” and eventually 2stopped playing for a while.

When Melanie Martinez was only 17 years of age, she auditioned for the third season on the NBC show The Voice in 2012She sang the song “Toxic” by Britney Spears. Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton hit their I want you button. Melanie was surprised and excited to start her career.

She picked Levine as her coach. That season was not won by Adam Levine. Melanie was eliminated by the audience in the Top 6. Even though she was devastated she still felt that good would come her way, regar

ding her career. Her intuition was right!

After being booted off The Voice she got a call from Atlantic Records. She was eventually signed but did not announce it officially until April 7, 2014. Before she announced her signing to the record label she released a single called “Dollhouse” on Feb. 9, 2014. Afterwards, she started working hard and expanding on her talents.

On May 19, 2014, she released the Dollhouse EP which skyrocketed. The music video for this song was officially seen one hundred million times as of January 2017. She has said she worked on most of her original work for 2014 in 2013, trying to capture and embrace her style and brand.

This song was inspired by toy sounds. She likes the whole creepy children or doll edgy esthetic. That represents her personality. A song from her EP, Carousel, hit No. 9 on the Alternative Digital Songs. Her song was featured on the fourth season of the FX network show American Horror Story: Freak Show. After the trailer came out for this show people wanted to know who wrote the opening song. Doing so exposed them to the rest of her EP and music.

June 1, 2015 was the release date for her single “Pity Party”. “Pity Party” was certified gold by the RIAA. This song was the song that made her career take off. Following “Pity Party”, two singles were released. One was called “Sippy Cup”. It talks about a mother’s struggle with alcoholism and trying to balance a dysfunctional family.

In the song the mother ends up killing her family because she couldn’t handle the stress. The second song is called “Soap”. It got 30 million views on YouTube. The songs talk about the character Crybaby holding all of her feelings and then all of a sudden not being able to hold it in anymore.

Later, Martinez releases her first official album, Crybaby. Crybaby is a story being told of a young girl going through life and growing into a young woman. As the album goes on, the character Crybaby tells her story growing up with a cheating father, an alcoholic for a mother, and a brother that is addicted to cannabis. On Wikipedia it states, “…she claims to have been referred to as a crybaby by others, which sparked the evolution for the titular character of her… album, Crybaby.” This album is extremely creepy, edgy, scary, and mysterious. The album was certified platinum on Feb. 24, 2017.

Martinez has announced a sophomore album is to be expected. She has not given an exact date to her fans. The fans suspect an album release in late 2018 to early 2019. Martinez have even announced she is writing a film for her previous album. She has not given a release date for the movie either. Melanie wants both the album and the movie

After reading and listening to Melanie Martinez’ music, here is what some of my family members had to say about it:

“I think that the profanity is unacceptable but the music does tell a story and has a deeper meaning than some of the more popular music out there.” (Elizabeth Mann)

“It is a little ridiculous for the image of her but, hey, if that is what people like now a days, then, I guess she is okay. I tend to agree with her (Elizabeth Mann). It does have a very valuable story.” (Roderick Mann)

“I think she is very pretty and cool. I like her different colored hair.” (Carmelina Terry)
