The Government Shutdown

Staff Writer: Arie Mitchell

On December 22, 2018, Donald Trump did what no one expected for his infamous wall; he shut the government down. As of today, this has been the longest shut down in the history of this country lasting 35 days! In an effort to get the money (which is estimated to be 21.6 million dollars, however may cost more) to support the wall, certain areas of the federal government have been pushed to cease activity.

The shutdown itself is affecting the Homeland Security Department, the Justice Department, the State and Treasury Department, the Transportation Department, the Agriculture Department, the Department of the Interior, and a few more. Other parts of the government have already been fully funded making them immune to Trump’s orders.

In many cases, people have called out of working and even have quit their jobs in order to make-up for their lost wages. This has been quite noticeable at airports. Around 800 thousand workers have participated in this leave of absence. Agencies like the FBI, the Bureau of Prisons, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and a few others have also fallen victim to Trump’s doings, and they have been forced to work without pay.

You do not have to be a part of the government or have a government funded job for the shutdown to cause any type of disruptions in your everyday life. People who receive benefits such as food stamps are affected as well as women and children under protection and aid of government funded protection centers.

One way it might affect you is if you still have not applied for your FASFA account. To all the seniors out there who decided to wait so late apply for your college funding, you might be in a bit of a pickle. That is exactly what happened to Branson Cox, a Woodstock High School senior. I have not signed up for my FASFA yet therefore it makes it difficult to get what I need to get done. However, it has not affected my pay in any way.”

Even Ann Coulter, who had publicly sided with Trump, is now beginning to rethink her past decisions. Though, it is not for the reason you think. It is simply because he is taking too long to build the wall! Yes, this largely hated woman says Trump will not be getting her vote in 2020 and his presidency will have been “a joke” and he is a president “who scammed the American people…he’ll have no legacy whatsoever.” She even made a joke tweet of it saying, “Miles completed yesterday—Zero…”.

Many people have taken to social media to voice their opinion of Trump and his shutdown and how it affects them and their lives. Instagram users have posted videos claiming that if they do not get their tax returns in time, they will see it through that he will not see a second term of being president. Others have come up with conspiracy theories that this was all mentioned in the book titled, “The Last President”. The book includes the Trump name as well as similar names to his family members and contains corresponding events that have occurred over the years surrounding Trump. Some of those include the accusation of being involved with Russia. What makes this all eerie is that the book was written in the 1800s.

Other conspirators have said that instead of the wall keeping immigrants out it is made to keep its U.S. citizens in.

While the shutdown has reeked a terrible havoc on numerous civilians, the government is back up and running temporarily. Beginning on January 26, the government will be back and operating until February 15. Trump wants people to know that this does not mean he will be letting up on the fact that he still wants his wall to be built and had some words to say about how it. “I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were being badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!”, Trump tweeted on January 25 at 7:33 in the evening.

Nancy Pelosi played a major part in getting the government to reopen; she did so by beating Trump at his own game. She made it clear to Trump the he would not be able to send the State of the Union address in the House Chamber unless the government had been reopened. This is how she got the temporary headway. “President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis and must reopen the government.” Pelosi said to a reporter.

If Trump does not put the shutdown to an official end, it could result in a harsh outcome for the public. With the lack of money being spent and put back into the community, it could result in a recession. Trump says he has no problem causing a recession due to the fact that he thinks we will be brought out if the slump by the wall. He doesn’t care what happens, as long as he gets what he wants.
