What color do you see?

Staff Writer: Selene Gomez

First it was the dress now it’s the shoe!  Social media has gone crazy trying to figure out if this image of a shoe is pink with white outlines or gray and blue outlines, and it all started with a post on Facebook made by Nicole Coulthard. She argued that she saw the shoe a whole different color than her friend did.

Nicole Coulthard, Facebook user posted, “Ok girls so my friend has just sent me this asking what color the shoe is, I would say pale pink and white, but she insists its pale blue and grey. “

Maria Gomez, graduate from Cherokee High School says, “Whoever the heck sees pink can come fight me, there is absolutely no way that it is blue!”

A Vans customer service representative, is familiar with the trend and says. “The company doesn’t stock a gray and teal shoe but says you could customize a shoe in those colors.”

Karla Deluna, senior at Cherokee High School tried to order a pair of gray and teal shoes but the colors were unavailable.

The shoe has sparked much debate and questions among people on social media. This

The dress sparked a debate on whether it was blue with black or white and gold.

The dress was color corrected and came out to be blue and black.

new trend also brought back the talk of the dress. In 2015 a photo of a seemingly blue and black dress surfaced onto social media, and like the shoe it caused a heated debate on whether it was white and gold or blue and black. In the end the public found that the lighting of the dress was off and that the real color was blue and black.

Olivia Hagar, Freshman says, “I’ve looked at this picture three times and the first time I saw it was clearly white with blue outlines, but then it was pink, and now its gray again! I’m so confused! Either my eyes are wack or science has some part in this.”

There are many factors that affect the color that a brain displays.  Our brains need to process the lighting around the object it is focusing on to figure out what color is being shown. People who see a pink shoe see a blue light in the background and the few who see a gray shoe see a white light in the background. Our brains must process the hand holding the shoe which confuses the brain, most people tend to have white shoelaces therefore their brain assumes they are white and see a pink shoe.

An Instagram poll showed that out of 31 people, 68% of them saw gray with blue shoes and 32% saw pink with white. Another survey from buzzfeed.com said that 87% of the 450,000 people who voted saw the gray version of the shoe.

Research shows that the way we perceive color depends on how our brains perceive different wavelengths of light. It also depends on the mood one may be in, and how they are feeling. The most common reason as to why people see different colors may be due to the perception and position someone may be in.

After waiting a few days, researchers from Business Insider claimed that, “Photoshop identifies the color as teal. After color correction, the shoes become pink. This matches the “blossom/white” vans.” They also claimed that “The difference depends on your sensitivity to light and how your brain is interpreting light.”

Jono Pech, twitter user claims “The shoe is a pink and white Vans Old Skool. They don’t make a grey and teal version. You’re welcome.”

An unnamed twitter user used an app to find out what the color really was and it turned out to be blue and gray.
