The Loaf: Week 7 College Football Picks

Sports Section Chair: Michael Brown

Welcome back to The Loaf! We’re back at it again for Week 7. Last week we went 3-4, which isn’t good. But we’re still 23-18-1 on the season so things could be a lot worse.

Week 7’s a big one for College Football. Red River and Florida-LSU are both some very big games, and both make appearances on this week’s edition of The Loaf:

Our first game on Saturday’s slate. You already know. Coming to you live from the Cotton Bowl. It’s Red River. And points will be had: #6 Oklahoma vs #11 Texas (OVER 75.5). Overs in OU games haven’t been as reliable this year simply because the Sooners’ defense has actually been decent. However, I think they’ll get tested in this game. Texas will score some. Their offense is prolific. And we know about Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma on offense. I am so excited for this game. Oklahoma 49, Texas 34

Alright, so Vegas clearly caught on with the trend. This number is huge. But until I’m proven otherwise, we’re still going with it. Give me Duke (-17) vs Georgia Tech (UNDER 49.5). The Jackets actually showed some life last week against Carolina offensively, but not enough for me to be swayed, especially at Wallace Wade, where Georgia Tech hasn’t won since 2013.  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This week is an under-heavy week. Next up, give me Michigan State @ #8 Wisconsin (UNDER 40.5). I mean, this game just screams under doesn’t it? Sparty is a solid under team yet again, with an offense that is borderline inept and a defense that is among the best in the country. Wisconsin, too, is great defensively, and even Jonathan Taylor will likely struggle some against this Michigan State defensive front. Don’t expect offensive fireworks in this one. #B1G Wisconsin 24, Michigan State 9

I expect Sparty to have about as much offensive success against Wisconsin as it did in the redbox bowl last year (they scored 6 points). Photo Credit: USA Today

We have another game this week where I have multiple plays. I’m gonna take #17 Iowa (+3.5) vs #10 Penn State and the (UNDER 42.5). Both of these plays really come down to this. It’s a Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium. That usually means two things: hardly any points scored, and a very, very close game. Unless you’re Ohio State and you lose by like 80 touchdowns, you usually see this game being like a 9-5 Iowa lead with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. That said, Iowa might just be better than Penn State. I don’t trust the Lions in this environment, and Iowa is going to thrive off it. Hawkeyes. Iowa 20, Penn State 17

Finally, we have the game of the week. And another under play. Give me #7 Florida @ #5 LSU (UNDER 56). This scares me because future Heisman trophy winner Joe Burrow is really good. But that’s the only thing that scares me. Both of these teams are so good & so talented on defense. Especially in the secondary (LSU is the true DBU). It’s gonna be tough for Trask and Burrow. Plus, Florida as a whole is so bleh on offense. And LSU is so good. The Gators won’t be scoring much in this game at all. But I expect their defense to keep them in it somewhat. LSU 27, Florida 10

That’s a wrap on this week’s The Loaf!! Enjoy your college football Saturday!
