The Loaf: Week 11 College Football Picks

Sports Section Chair: Michael Brown

Welcome back to The Loaf!!!!! If you couldn’t tell from my overuse of exclamation points, I am very excited. Sure, we were at .500 going into last week. And as the calendar flipped to November, and it became crunch time, we equipped our clutch gene, and The Loaf went a perfect 6-0 (!!!!) last week to improve us to a very respectable 36-30-1 on the season. Oh, you just love to see that!

That being said, we need to build on our success, because there’s a lot of football to be played and a lot of toast to be had. I’ve got 6 picks this week:

First up is Maryland (+44) @ #1 Ohio State, and I don’t have much reasoning to this one other than the fact that a team in a Power 5 conference being favored by this many points against a team in its own division should be illegal. This is just a principle play. Ohio State 49, Maryland 14

This was from Maryland’s game against Ohio State last season. That game sure was a lot closer than 44 points. Photo Credit: Hammer and Rails

Next up is the official 2019 team of The Loaf, Louisville (+6.5) @ Miami (FL). This Cardinals team just is continually being underrated. People don’t realize that UofL is quite alright. Plus Miami isn’t all that good at all. And it’s been anything but consistent. So the fact that the Canes are coming off road victories against Pitt and rival Florida State does nothing but encourage me to pick against them here. 6.5 is too many points. Heck, Louisville could win this game. Louisville 28, Miami (FL) 20

This game against Clemson was an aberration from what has been a decent season for Louisville thus far. Photo Credit: The Crunch Zone

Long before I saw the total, I knew as soon as I saw Iowa and Wisconsin on the schedule that I would take the under, regardless of what the number would be. Low and behold, it wasn’t big. So give me #18 Iowa @ #13 Wisconsin (UNDER 38). Two great defenses, two mediocre offenses. This is an easy pick. Wisconsin 21, Iowa 13

Man, Wisconsin’s defense is so good. A pleasure to watch. Photo Credit: Detroit Free Press

I’m gonna keep it in the Big Ten West with another under play, Purdue @ Northwestern (UNDER 39.5). Both of these teams have offenses that are just putrid. Purdue has unfortunately been so decimated by injuries, that it looks sort of like a high school team at this point. Great for unders, though. Meanwhile, Northwestern is just terrible. The last 44 drives by the Cats offense have consisted of seven (7) turnovers and zero (0) touchdowns. I don’t know how that’s possible, but it’s beautiful and disgusting all at the same time. Under. Purdue 14, Northwestern 6

As Louisville has been the certifiably official team of The Loaf this season, Kentucky has been the antithesis to that. I love fading Kentucky. The Cats just stink. So that’s part of this. But also, Tennessee ain’t too bad either. The Vols have been improving this season, and I like their chances against a not-so-formidable Wildcat squad. Plus, Tennessee is wearing the Orange Britches. Not picking against them in those. No sir. Tennessee 34, Kentucky 20

In this weeks Game of the Week Jr., I like #4 Penn State (-6.5) @ #17 Minnesota. I love Minnesota. The Gophers have been a great story, and it’s awesome that they’ve risen to relevance so quickly under PJ Fleck. That said, they haven’t played anyone this season, and are not extremely reflective of their 8-0 record. Penn State is. Penn State has multiple statement wins against solid teams, and the Nittany Lions are a great team. One of these teams is pretty good, but one of them is borderline elite. And that discrepancy will be clear on the field this Saturday. Penn State 31, Minnesota 17

Even though this is from last season, and even though Penn State lost this game, this picture is great. I love KJ Hamler. He is, simply put, ELECTRIC. Photo Credit: Penn State University

So that’s what I’ve got for this week’s The Loaf! Enjoy your college football Saturday!!
