The Loaf: Conference Championship Week Edition

     Sports Section Chair: Michael Brown

Welcome back to The Loaf!!! It’s already conference championship week, and I can’t believe it. We went 2-4 last week, and we’re honestly just really mediocre, sitting at 48-44-1 on the season. But it’s okay! It’s gonna be fine.

I’ve got 4 picks this week:

#5 Utah vs #13 Oregon (UNDER 46)  Buddy, I am excited for this one. Two really good teams, two dominant defenses. A principle of mine is that defense always prevails in championship games like this, and this one is an obvious example. This is going to be sort of like a boxing match – both teams throwing punches, all that type of stuff. Plus, we all know the old adage – defense wins championships. Defense will win this game. Oregon 21, Utah 17

Central Michigan (-6.5) vs Miami (OH – I’m not necessarily proud of having the MAC Championship game on the board here, but I just feel like the Chips are being undervalued. Central Michigan has been a pretty decent football team this year, winning lots of games by lots of pointsIn that same light, Miami hasn’t been nearly as good this season. It just happened to be the best team in one of the worst divisions in college football. Moral of the story is this: Chips are winning this one by at least a touchdown. Central Michigan 41, Miami (OH) 17

#7 Baylor vs #6 Oklahoma (OVER 64) – So, remember everything I just said about Utah & Oregon? Forget about it. Burn it. Defense won’t be making an appearance in this game. It didn’t when these teams played the first time, and I don’t believe it will here either. Jalen Hurts and this Oklahoma offense showed what it can do when it isn’t turning the ball over, and it was scary good. And I expect them to be at their best with a trip to the College Football Playoff on the line. And the same can be said about Baylor. Baylor has a shot at this thing too, but in order to win, they know they’ll have to keep pace. If anyone’s gonna let them, it’s the Oklahoma defense. I took the over in last year’s Big 12 Championship, and it backfired. But I’m not scared. Oklahoma 41, Baylor 31

#4 Georgia (+7) vs #2 LSU – Oh, man. I’m excited for this game. LSU is so dang good. That is, Joe Burrow and company are. The defense has been sketchy. Despite its sketchiness, LSU has been able to easily our score everyone on its schedule this season. But I don’t know, it’s something about Georgia that just makes me wonder. There’s no reason at all Georgia can’t score on LSU. No reason whatsoever. The big question is whether or not the Dawgs’ defense can make enough stops to keep Georgia in the game. I believe it can. Georgia has the best defense in college football (aside from maybe Utah). They’ll be ready. Plus, Georgia has more to play for! They have to win to secure a spot in the Playoff, while LSU is in regardless. When it has this much to play for, Georgia is too good to lose this game by a touchdownGeorgia 35, LSU 31
