Great Webtoons You Should Binge Read

Staff Writer: Kylise Carino

First, you might be wondering what Webtoon is, and that would be a good question. A Webtoon is a digital comic app which originated in South Korea. The app was pretty niche around the time of its release, but has seen a surge in popularity due to the rising manga and comic loving consumers. Having unique user created content is one of the strongest and most notable features of Webtoon that makes it stand out from other reading apps.

The digital comics I’m going to be talking about are coming from the Webtoon app by LINE. This app is free and all the comics on it are all also free, so there really isn’t a reason not to give these comics a read. That being said, here are my favorite Webtoons you should give a try.

One of the Webtoons that I have found myself to really enjoy is called The Four of Them. The story revolves around Johnny and his friends Mariel, Gaby and Martina. It starts off introducing us to Johnny and him finding out that his longtime crush Mariel has started dating. The person she’s dating happens to be Johnny’s sister. After he find this out, he becomes depressed, and the story takes us on Johnny’s road to getting over Mariel and a bunch of his other misadventures with his friends.

The artwork for the comic is extremely cute and charming. My favorite character design out of the whole cast is Micaela. It’s very well designed. Sydney Craig, a sophomore at Woodstock high school, texted me about her favorite character, saying how, “Johnny is so cute, and I think he deserves the world.” I’ll have to agree with that statement. This comic has 46 chapters as of Jan. 23 and it will take no time to read at all. So, go give it a read!

Another fantastic Webtoon to pick up would be the insanely popular Lore Olympus. Whether or not you’re into Greek mythology, the story really caters to many audiences. There is no mythological research needed to love this story. Rachel Smythe is a fantastic artist and writer who really knows how to adapt a classic story into her own while still holding the integrity of the source material.

Lore Olympus follows the age-old story of the abduction of Persephone, the Greek goddess of vegetation by Hades, the god of the underworld. I walked into the story not really knowing much about the whole myth, but she takes the story and flies with it. Although calling it 100 percent accurate would be giving it to much, it’s still an amazing rendition.

Anthony Edmunds, sophomore at Woodstock, was quoted saying ,“Lore Olympus really intrigued me, I really enjoyed the mythical aspect of it.” I didn’t peg Anthony for a Webtoon reader, but the world is full of surprises. I do agree with him though. Lore Olympus can be really intriguing and if you don’t read it, you’re not cool, sorry I don’t make the rules.

One Webtoon I really want to talk about is True beauty. The story is about Jugyeong. At the beginning of the story she gets bullied a lot for her looks, so she decides that she’s had enough and tries to perfect the art of makeup, and soon enough she gets good at it. After that she moves schools and she becomes popular because everyone thinks she’s so pretty, but no one knows what she really looks like without all her makeup. And the story goes from there.

The story is mostly focused on romance and the relationships Jugyeong has with other people, it has sort of a slow start but quickly builds into a solid story. It has become one of my favorite webtoons on the app

Joseph Mines, a sophomore from Woodstock, told me his opinion on the comic, “I honestly didn’t think I’d be into the comic but it’s a fun read, and JugYeong is really hot.” It definitely is a fun read.

The last Webtoon I’m going to be talking about is UnOrdinary. The story is about John. He’s just a normal teenager at a high school where the social elite happen to possess powers and abilities. But John’s got a secret past that threatens to bring down the school’s whole social order. Fulfilling his duty won’t be easy though, when the whole school seems to be against him.

This comic is so good, and I think everyone should give it a read. Brandon Reyes, sophomore at Woodstock, told me his opinion on UnOrdinary “This is the only webtoon I really read and keep up to date with, it’s nice and I wish more of my friends would read it.” Couldn’t agree more

This app really has some hidden gems so please give it a glance, and go get your phone and start reading Webtoons.
