There is nothing like a good Christmas song to get people into the holiday spirit. But who started this amazing tradition? The first ever Christmas song dates all the way back to 129 AD according to, Christmas Songs: History and Origin Story, it said, “It was inspired, perhaps written, by a Roman bishop for a service in Rome that celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ.”
Christians in these early times used carols and hymns to celebrate the winter solstice and celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth. Throughout the ages Christmas songs have been a crucial part of the season and have greatly evolved from year to year. In the modern era we have songs in all kinds of categories, like ones with snowmen, sleigh rides, reindeer, and Santa Claus. But despite these changes to the original meanings and message of these songs they serve the same purpose in spreading holiday cheer.

Part of the reason we have so many amazing Christmas songs is because of the spectacular artists that sing them. Popular artists like Michael Bublé, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey are all household names and famous for their covers and original Christmas songs. Michael Bublé is known for his timeless Christmas album that includes covers of famous Christmas songs like, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” and “I’ll be home for Christmas.”
His songs bring a sense of nostalgia and Christmas cheer to everyone who hears them. Another memorable singer is Whitney Houston who sings songs like, “Do you hear what I hear” and “Have yourself a merry little Christmas.” Her powerful and rich voice is always a treat to hear. Of course, the most famous Christmas artist would have to be Mariah Carey, the queen of Christmas. Her most popular song, “All I Want for Christmas is You” is a fan favorite every year. She has covered so many songs and is the most popular Christmas song artist.

However, Christmas songs are about getting into the Christmas spirit and making memories with friends and family. Ms. McIntyre, a math teacher here at Woodstock, said that her favorite is “Little St. Nick” by the Beach Boys. “I listened to this song growing up and it makes me happy. I also love the Beach Boys.”
Student Avery Cauwels said she likes any Christmas songs sung by Mariah Carey, “She’s a great songwriter and she has good music.”
Another math teacher, Mr. West, said that his favorite song was, “Winter Wonderland,” because he sang it in a talent show.
Other students said some of their favorite Christmas songs were “Feliz Navidad,” “Last Christmas,” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.” There are so many amazing songs and no matter what your favorite Christmas song is, everyone can enjoy and appreciate the magic Christmas song that brings to the season.
